Public Speaking Demystified

What’s your business called?

Public Speaking Demystified

Can you describe it in one sentence?

I help individuals and businesses to overcome their fears of speaking, especially in public and to become more confident and assertive in their lives

When did you start it and what inspired you?

2014. I had started other ideas before but “played” for about 2 years. It does take time to decide what you want to do. I wanted to work outside an institution- I used to be a teacher- and I encountered self development in 2011. I am a coach and NLP practitioner and I use drama and theatre techniques with self- development work in my courses.

How did you find your start up?

a bit too complicated- lots to organise website, marketing, message, photos blogging and a lot to understand when you have never been in a business environment

How do you manage working around your children?

I only work part time on the business and usually clock off at 3pm but might work some week end and some evening or go networking at unsociable hours.

Can you describe a typical day?

At the moment a lot of the business is taken up promoting my Public Speaking Demystifed courses, I do not think that there is a typical day. I go networking and now assist Winning women Essex Chelmsford group and will for example go to Essex Business Women experience to present my work this coming Friday. Otherwise a lot of time taken up networking online and writing blogs and making videos. And this year has been mainly taken up writing a book about my courses and my work: ” The Power of Outrageous Expression” now out on Amazon. I can not quite believe it yet!

What have you found hardest?

Not losing sight of what you do and believing you have a message and a job to do out there, developing a network which believes in you and can support you practically and emotionally.Organising myself as I can be scatty!

What’s the best thing about being self employed?

Freedom and managing your own time.

What are your plans for the future?

I would like to run about 3 to 4 1 day Public Speaking courses a month over 10 months and give high quality experience to my participants (I only take 10 to 12 particpants). Ultimatly, I think I want to use more drama skills based work and run other courses to help others find their voice and express themselves, through games and improvisation . I am also looking into videos courses to sell online.

What advice would you give for someone just starting out?

Make sure you have enough money to keep you going or a passive income.
Work consistently but also do other things and let go of the outcomes. Rome was not build in one day!
Use social media consistently but do not get overwhelmed by it
Ask for help and develop a business network which suits you ( there are plenty out there)

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

Setting up a business is not for everyone and is a bit like a roller coaster. As a mum you need to be aware that you are not going to have the time to do everything and that you need to strike a balance between work and family and play. Never lose sight of yourself and ask for help as most businesses will have their struggles, but also their immense rewards.
