SD Cards and flash drive

Data Storage in Your Home Based Business

Even in our personal lives, we all need to store some of data, be it photos, emails or digital copies of important documents. If you run a business from home your data storage requirements will be even greater. There are a variety of ways to store data these days and the best one for you will depend on your needs.

Removable Storage

Removable storage refers to things like SD Cards and Flash drives which allow you to transfer data from one device to another. If you use a digital camera, to take picture of products or to promote your business on Instagram, a Micro SD Card can be used to store your images and then transfer them to a computer for editing. If you shop around you can get a good deal on a micro SD Card with 128GB of storage. These are great for bloggers who take lots of photos and have high storage requirements.

Flash drives use the same technology as SD Cards and are good if you want to move data from one computer to another. They are also useful for storing things like presentation that you may want to be able to open on a laptop that isn’t yours.

Computer Storage

In previous years, to get a good amount of storage, home based businesses had to invest in a PC or a Mac. Nowadays, laptops can have a much greater amount of storage while still only taking up a small amount of space.

Laptops are now moving towards SSD (Solid State Hard drives) and can have storage anywhere between 16GB and 500GB. This means there’s an option suitable for whatever for your home based business needs.

Another option is a Chromebook. These are Google’s entry into the Laptop market. They are light and very fast but only usually have between 16GB and 32GB of storage. The intention is that this is then complimented with additional storage, either with a removable storage device (SD card or flash drive) or via Cloud storage.

Cloud Storage

Cloud storage involves saving your data remotely. Many companies now provide this service and lots offer a limited amount of data for free. If your budget is tight you may want to make use of the free options from a number of different providers. This might be tricky to keep track of but could work if you’re very organised.

Alternatively you can pay to store everything with one service. Whichever option you choose, Money Saving Expert has created a great post to help you compare all of the cloud storage options available.

Cloud storage is also an excellent way to back up data that you have saved elsewhere. The data you hold in your business is valuable to you so it’s important to make sure it’s backed up in case the worst happens.

Most people will use data storage options from all of these categories to meet the needs of their business, as well as their personal needs. Remember that Data security is key so ensure that you set up strong passwords to keep all of your information safe and take proper care of your SD Cards and Flash Drives.
