Diversity is something we should champion and promote, but it can also bring new challenges for business leaders. The makeup of the workforce has changed and evolved, and leaders today require new skills to manage effectively. The workforce is more diverse than ever, and to take advantage of this and create cohesive, inclusive workplaces, leaders can benefit from training and learning opportunities.
As you can see from the infographic below, diversity is a feature of modern-day workforces. In the US, almost 60% of the workforce is female, and more than 40% of new entrants are from non-majority groups.
When you bring a group of people together, there will always be challenges, but combining individuals from different backgrounds can be particularly tricky. Examples of obstacles that leaders may face include different attitudes to work ethic, different approaches to authority and varied communication preferences and social skills.
To overcome potential barriers and promote workplace cohesion and inclusivity, there are several steps you can take as a leader. Undertaking and providing training, developing self-awareness and learning about different cultures can all be beneficial. It’s also wise to consider introducing policies that promote tolerance and diversity and to align wider business objectives with goals focused on championing collaboration and bringing people together.
Diversity can improve morale, fuel innovation and create functional, efficient, productive and welcoming work environments. If you’re a leader, or you have plans to pursue a management role in the future, why not take a look at the infographic below in more detail?
