Can you describe it in one sentence?

ISTD Disco freestyle street and rock n roll dance school

When did you start it and what inspired you?

2006, because I was at an age where i didn’t want to stop dancing but all my friends had stopped. So I just started 3 classes of my own on a Saturday morning. I now have 20 classes over 5 days a week.

How did you fund your start up?

Myself, I printed leaflets on cheap paper and used an old CD player and CDs until I started earning

How do you manage working around your children?

I had a baby a year ago… I’ve been hard. My husband, my mum and I juggle between our working times to keep our baby in a routine. I’m very tired and stressed at times.

Can you describe a typical day?

Wake up, sort out my baby, answer messages, mix music, lunch, answer messages, fill out paper work. 4pm drop baby off to my mums or husbands work then teach til 8:30pm. Go home, cook for hubby. Bed.

What have you found hardest?

Honestly- juggling my work life balance. I get constant messages which can cause an argument at home if im not focusing on family time. I work too much and worry too much about pleasing everyone- it’s just not possible. And missing bedtimes.

What’s the best thing about being self employed?

Having control over your job is priceless. I’m lucky I love my job. The best thing in my job is getting to know so many great families! And the smiles on the children’s faces!

What are your plans for the future?

To build up my school to be bigger and better!

What advice would you give for someone just starting out?

Don’t! Marry a rich Man and stay at home with your children! These days are precious and no amount of money if worth to upset or guilt when you leave them.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

I LOVE my job. But I’m glad I started it when I was 19. If I had been older and had a family it wouldn’t have been possible or successful. I’m so unbelievably grateful to all the dance mums who have supported me over the last ten years. They have made this possible for me and I’ve made some great friends.
