What’s your business called?
Can you describe it in one sentence?
Business development consultancy for digital and creative marketing
When did you start it and what inspired you?
2004 – I always knew from a young age that I wanted to work for myself, I wanted the freedom to do what I wanted when I wanted.
How did you fund your start up?
£20k personal loan from the bank, split between myself and my business partner
How do you manage working around your children?
I often work in the mroning for an hour before they wake, I work when they are at school/nursery and I¹m around when they are not at school/nursery. I make sure I¹m very present at those times, not working and enjoying my time with them. During school holidays we often go away for long stretches. For example we spent last summer in Fuerteventura, I took my laptop with me and worked a couple of hours each morning and then spent the afternoons by the pool. My husband looked after the kids during the morning.
Can you describe a typical day?
I usually work from home which some people can find isolating but I
don¹t. People say it requires a lot of motivation and discipline but
personally I¹ve never struggled with this. Perhaps because I always have so much to do and love my work! Usually I wake at 6, do an hours work before the kids wake up. We then have cuddles in bed for 30 minutes (I love this time!), then it¹s breakfast together, always at the table together then get them ready for school and nursery. I¹m back home at 09.30 and work pretty solidly until 3.15 – time is spent on both my businesses, catching up with clients or having planning calls with people who I am coaching and helping build their own home business. Pick kids up from school/nursery, spend time with them doing homework etc and get dinner ready. After the kids are in bed, I might catch up with more work. Many of the families I¹m working with are building their own home businesses around an existing full-time job so they are only free in the evenings, which is fine by me.
What have you found hardest?
Taking time out during maternity leave, I only had 6 months off as back then I didn¹t have any residual income and couldn¹t afford to not be earning for more than 6 months. Also all the unexpected days when my little boy is poorly.
What’s the best thing about being self employed?
What are your plans for the future?
Continue to build my home business for residual income and show as many families as I can that there is another way to earn an income, that you can have it both ways – time with the kids AND money to enjoy life!
What advice would you give for someone just starting out?
Just do it! Set your goals, write your plan and put in the activity to
achieve those goals. Work on your mindset every day too!
