Can you describe it in one sentence?
I provide photographic services from maternity, birth, newborn and family.
When did you start it and what inspired you?
I started working in local studio in 2006 when i had a family portrait with my family. Never experienced anything like that before (it wasnt common in my country) and i just thought that would be lovely job to have (i worked as an accountant before). After having my second baby i was made redundant and thats how i became self employed. It was the best thing that happened to me.
How did you find your start up?
I obviously had a practice with photographing families but found real passion with newborns once i had my first baby and wanted to do sth different to a photographic studio experience. With lots of practice on family and friends babies i became more confident with positioning and developed my own style
How do you manage working around your children?
I have supportive husband and MIL and couple of days my youngest is at preschool. At the beginning i used to work on my husbands days off and then made decision to devote more time to it as my business grown
Can you describe a typical day?
Not typical days for me as it depends if i shoot, edit or just try to do some marketing but try to dedicate 4 days 9.30-2.30 to my business as thats why my children are in childcare so i can provide
What have you found hardest?
Marketing – im totally useless and 90% of my work is word of mouth which is nice in a way
What’s the best thing about being self employed?
Flexibility
What are your plans for the future?
Just carry on but direct my attention on bringing in the business. I have significant growth of business year on year but its pot luck in my opinion.
What advice would you give for someone just starting out?
Do a business plan and write down your goals for year 1,2 and 5
