Running a Food Business: Truly Chocolates

Annette works long hours running a food business, often not getting to bed until 1am but she loves what she does and being able to work around her children.

Truly Chocolates

Can you describe it in one sentence?

High quality novelty chocolate company

When did you start running a food business and what inspired you?

Oct 2011 after a failed marriage and therefore busines

How do you manage working around your children?

By working from home. Pros and cons thou as it doesn’t matter if kids sick, teacher training day etc we’re here but also we don’t ever stop working. No “its 5pm I have to go home.”

Can you describe a typical day?

Turn machines on @7am , get kids ready for school. Check emails and orders from overnight, diary for meetings etc, take the kids to school. 9am Temper and make chocolate for orders, wrap and pack chocolate. 3pm Collect kids from school take orders to the post office, do dinner, homework and club run around. Kids to bed @8pm. Complete paper work, check emails and if production finished for the day clean room and prep for the next day (@10pm, if not then continue with production (Our cut off time is mid night) then clean down etc before bed.@1am

What have you found hardest about running a food business?

All the paper work and legalities. The isolation of working from home.

What’s the best thing about being self employed?

Being able to see the ideas grow, being able to make decisions.

What are your plans for the future?

To have a unit and offer parties and workshops.

What advice would you give for someone just starting out?

Think about what you want to achieve in your first year and what you want it to look like. How do you want to get their, who is available to help you, what courses can you take?

Go for it, I have and it was the best desicion we ever made. Its tough, exhausting and weekends are not a days off. but what you have is all yours. Good luck
