Tell us your name and a bit about your family? When did you become a Mum and to whom?

I’m Suze and I am very lucky to have my partner, my daughter Libby who’s twelve and our little shihtzu Buzzby in our little family.

 

What’s your business called?

It’s called Heaven’s Homebaked Cakes. I just had to use my surname Heaven, in my business name.

 

Can you describe it in one sentence?

I love to create and bake celebration cakes, cupcakes, bakes, takeaway afternoon teas and postal bakes.

 

When did you become a Self employed baker and what inspired you?

I started my business in August 2018. I felt inspired by the Sugarcraft and cake decorating course I was doing for fun at the time, and wanted to do more of it whilst earning money!

 

How did you fund your start up?

I started small using some of the money I had been left in an inheritance. I thought it was a good use of the money.

 

How do you manage working around your children?

My daughter started high school in September so that has given me time during the day to devote to growing and working on my business.

 

Can you describe a typical day, what tasks do you have to get done, how do you manage your time?

A typical day starts with checking and responding to Facebook messages and notifications, and posting at the start of the day. The morning is usually when I bake, whilst simultaneously posting and checking messages, the afternoon is usually decorating or making cake decorations. It depends on the orders I have that week. I tend to plan my week out on a Monday morning. I do get out and about sometimes too, to networking events and sell my cakes at a local toddler group, so sometimes I’m doing that.

 

What challenges have you faced in your business and how have you overcome them?

Getting to grips with the financial side is a big challenge for me. I’m hopeless with numbers and have to ask for help from my partner. Sometimes it’s hard to know what to prioritise as there’s so many things to do but I love the variety and I love only having myself to be accountable to.

 

What’s the best thing about being

Being your own boss. Flexibility. Working in the way you want to work.

 

What are your plans for the future?

To become more profitable! To work more of a regular working day and have more time off in the evenings! To develop my network of local businesses who I work with.

 

What advice would you give for someone just starting out in business?

You need to have perseverance a plenty and be determined to succeed. Do your research, know the market. Customise your products around current trends. Network and work with other small businesses.

I love it! Running your own business doing something you love is the best!

Running two Businesses: Confident Cooking and Tea for You

Tell us your name and a bit about your family? When did you become a Mum and to whom?

Jacky Farbrace and I am 54. My husband is Kevin, 56 and we have been married 15yrs. We have two children, Michael 20yr and Lucy 17yr.  We also have our spoilt Westie Darcy.

What’s your business called?

I have two business. Confident Cooking and Tea to You.

Can you describe it in one sentence?

Confident Cooking –  I will show you how to cook basic, tasty family meals and support you in ditching the ready meal and takeaway along with meal planning and easy to use recipes.

Tea to You – I provide an Afternoon Tea service which is delivered to your home for your enjoyment as well as traditional cakes and cupcakes made to order.

When did you become a Mumpreneur and what inspired you?

I had my first business 7yrs ago doing Book keeping for self employed individuals.  This came about wanting to be flexible around the children when they were at school and being able to do more things with them in and around the school, like attending ALL the plays, fairs, PTA events, sports days etc etc.  It also overcame the need for constant child care during school holidays.

How did you fund your start up?

Out of my own money.  I cut down my days at my paid job and started taking clients on until I had enough to quit my job.

How do you manage working around your children?

When they were at school all my work was done between 9am -2.30pm and in the evenings if necessary.  Now it is done around being a taxi service for my daughter between college, work and boyfriend. My son is at university now so he is completely independent.  I also have the added responsibility of taking my elderly mother to and fro doctor and hospital appointments, so the flexibility still comes into play.

Can you describe a typical day, what tasks do you have to get done, how do you manage your time?

I get up around 8am (I know that’s late, but I can) quick cuppa and a look at facebook & Instagram. Take daughter to college, 16mile round trip. Home, a bit of breakfast, tidy kitchen, put any washing on and attend to any other household jobs I may have.  If I have a Tea to deliver that day, then all household jobs wait until the afternoon as I have fresh scones to make and sandwiches to prepare.  All Cakes would have been made the night before. Most Teas are booked between 12pm & 2pm.  Squeeze in some lunch have another look at Facebook & Instagram.  In the afternoon I will plan content for Confident Cooking, recipes, meal plans, What will I video or photograph me cooking.  Plan dinner (will it be something I can use in my cooking group).  4pm, collect daughter from bus stop in town (the bus doesn’t come out to us).  I then sit and have a cup of tea and a natter about her day for half an hour.  5pm, check diary to remind myself what I am doing tomorrow and rest of week, it’s an age thing, brain of a gold fish, then start preparing dinner.  I may or may not set up camera ready to video or photograph what I am doing.

This is a typical day, but on a busy day, I will fit in grocery shopping, a trip to the doctors or hospital with my mum (she has regular check ups for her cancer for which she is in remission and on a waiting list for a new knee).  Squeeze in a trip to the dog groomers and vets, a catch up with friends over a latte or a chat with my dad and there you have my life.  Oh, Husband comes home anywhere between 6 & 8pm, so a catch up with him, back on Facebook & Instagram, then my time (Corrie), glass of red or a G&T, soak in the bath and bed around 11pm.

What challenges have you faced in your business and how have you overcome them?

The main challenge is always money.  Wanting to invest in the business with coaching, Website development, Social media campaigns and support, merchandise and advertising material.  Have I overcome them, not really, it is all on a wing and a prayer and what I can afford at the time.  It’s frustrating because I know to be able to invest would grow my business and allow these things to happen.  Chicken & Egg.

What’s the best thing about being Mumpreneur?

Doing what I want to do when I want to do it.  Having control over what I do and how I do it and being able to drop everything to be there for my family and friends.

What are your plans for the future?

I want to grow my cooking business passively to a point where it is earning me enough money that my husband can take early or semi retirement. The plan is that he will be able to do this in 5yrs time.

What advice would you give for someone just starting out in business?

Just do it.  I spent too many years thinking about my business until I was so unhappy with the constraints of a paid job that I decided to go for it.  Don’t be scared.  It does help to having a really supportive husband.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

Don’t let other people put you off, follow your own instinct and do what you love.  They say hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I wasted so many “what if’s” and “if only’s” that I could have been at my 5yr plan and beyond by now.  But, better late than never, at least I won’t wonder now, because now I know.

Jeraldine Curran, married mother of three boys. I became a mum for the first time on 7th September 1995, when my beautiful 1st son Shaun was born, after a 3 hour labour.

Can you describe it in one sentence?

Improving health and wellbeing through food and lifestyle choices

When did you become a Mumpreneur and what inspired you?

How do you manage working around your children?

I have always worked around my children and along with being a fitness instructor I also worked for a company called Press Index, again working around my children so I could be at home with them.

Can you describe a typical day, what tasks do you have to get done, how do you manage your time?

A typical day is getting my children breakfast before school and making lunches, then off to the clinic to see clients, or running cookery demonstrations, talks on nutrition or filming – no day is the same.
Even at the weekends I can sometimes be working, but I always find the time to feed my family well

What challenges have you faced in your business and how have you overcome them?

The main challenges are to help my children with their homework, while studying for my own my MSc qualification at the same time as building my business. I’m often up at 5am to get ahead with my workload before I get my boys up for school. I’m currently learning how to update my website.

What’s the best thing about being Mumpreneur?

The best thing about being a mumpreneur is that I was able to stay at home and bring my children up while still having an income.

What are your plans for the future?

What advice would you give for someone just starting out in business?

My advice would be to do what you love, when you wake up first thing in the morning you should leap out of bed and look forward to the day. If you don’t feel this way, then make plans to change – you’ve got to do what you love.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

When you find something that you love doing don’t give up, keep going, you will get there in the end. Have a goal and a plan then focus until you achieve it.

How do you manage working around your children?

By working from home. Pros and cons thou as it doesn’t matter if kids sick, teacher training day etc we’re here but also we don’t ever stop working. No “its 5pm I have to go home.”

Can you describe a typical day?

Turn machines on @7am , get kids ready for school. Check emails and orders from overnight, diary for meetings etc, take the kids to school. 9am Temper and make chocolate for orders, wrap and pack chocolate. 3pm Collect kids from school take orders to the post office, do dinner, homework and club run around. Kids to bed @8pm. Complete paper work, check emails and if production finished for the day clean room and prep for the next day (@10pm, if not then continue with production (Our cut off time is mid night) then clean down etc before bed.@1am

What have you found hardest about running a food business?

All the paper work and legalities. The isolation of working from home.

What’s the best thing about being self employed?

Being able to see the ideas grow, being able to make decisions.

What are your plans for the future?

To have a unit and offer parties and workshops.

What advice would you give for someone just starting out?

Think about what you want to achieve in your first year and what you want it to look like. How do you want to get their, who is available to help you, what courses can you take?

Go for it, I have and it was the best desicion we ever made. Its tough, exhausting and weekends are not a days off. but what you have is all yours. Good luck

Running a Hospitality Business with Indulgence Boutique Hospitality

My name is Jo Robinson, I am married to Anthony with two children, Charlie 13 and Emily 1

What’s your business called?
I have two businesses, Indulgence Boutique Hospitality, an event catering company and a restaurant The Kitchen, Farnborough

Can you describe it in one sentence?
Both business are entirely for people who are serious about food or love eating great food, served with meticulous attention to detail and friendly, professional customer service.

When did you become a Mumpreneur and what inspired you?
I fell into it really, I realised that I could not have a family working all the hours I was in my previous job and it helped that my husband, Anthony, is a phenomenal chef! So it was a no brainer and have been blessed with a good work ethic and a sprinkling of luck along the way.

How did you fund your start up?
I was lucky enough to buy a flat at a young age and was able to raise a bit of capital through that and by selling everything I owned, including my car! I must also mention my amazing family who took a great leap of faith with me and gave me a loan! I had the most amazing bank manager who totally believed in my business plan and supported my application for a commercial mortgage.

How do you manage working around your children?
Even though they are older, it is still a tremendous juggle at times. Although my team are amazingly understanding that the children come first.

Can you describe a typical day, what tasks do you have to get done, how do you manage your time?
There is absolutely no typical day. Today I have escaped from the office to work on my laptop at the most inspirational location …. Soho Farmhouse, I try and come at least once a week to clear my head, plan my diary and get stuck into anything that requires 100% focus without the welcome distractions of a busy office. Yesterday I was out of the office in meetings all day and the day before I was in the office working and planning with our brilliant team!

What challenges have you faced in your business and how have you overcome them?
Wow, without a doubt the greatest challenge for me has been delegating and trusting others. When you are desperately let down, which has happened on more than one occasion, you just have to pick yourself up and keep on going. And each time something happens, learn from mistakes made and move on. Right now I have the best team around me I have ever had! They are all better at the jobs than I am – I have a brilliant accountant (my absolute weakness), fantastic managers and junior team who are so passionate about my businesses and looking after our clients to the best of their ability.

What’s the best thing about being Mumpreneur?
Being able to plan my own diary – I have yet to miss a Christmas play or a sports day. If the children are poorly – everything business wise takes a back seat. Although my inner mother’s guilt will whisper in my ear I still don’t do enough!
And being in control of my own destiny, however wobbly it feels at times, I am in kind of in charge!

What are your plans for the future?
I have so many ….. To keep building a brilliant team within the business, to win some interesting new contracts in 2017, live life to the full and travel with my amazing family whenever I can and spend as much time as I can with my father.

What advice would you give for someone just starting out in business?
Do something you believe 100% in, act with integrity at all times and simply keep going! When you get to the stage of recruiting – do not be afraid to employ people who are better than you, all of my team are specialists in whatever area of the business they are working in – far better than me! And always remember the phrase – when the going gets tough, tough get going! Certainly the most important mantra having survived a recession with two high end, front line businesses.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
If I start I might not make it home to my children tonight ……..! But one thing is get a brilliant accountant – interview loads and make sure they have the same ethos as you. Accounts has always been my biggest weakness and I have gone through unnecessary financial pain having inept accountants people on board at times and not having a complete understanding of the money side of things. And find a business mentor – someone you admire or who has a similar outlook as you and listen to every pearl of wisdom they can offer.

What was the business called and what did it do?
I bought a second restaurant when I had 2 children under 2! It transpired that the village is predominantly inhabited by quakers (not great drinkers or fans of dining out regularly!) – major rookie error on the market research.

How long did you run it for?
6 months before I cut my losses and ran for the hills, quickly! Having lost a heap of money in the process!

What do you think went wrong?
I was too arrogant to think that I could make anything work and too busy with my little ones to do enough market research!

What did you learn from it?
I didn’t have the midas touch that everyone else thought I had and I wouldn’t have bought it in the first place if I had the excellent accountant that I have now! I am much more cautious these days but without this failure I would have never founded the event catering company which is now a very successful company.

Tell us your name and a bit about your family? When did you become a Mum and to whom?

My name is Sarah and I am a mum to Eliza (4) and Dexter (2).
We lI ve a busy life in Essex juggling work school and nursery runs. My parents are a massive influence in my kids lives and my mum is also my business partner and my total rock but sadly they live over 200 miles from me hence why we sell our products in two different locations in the South of England 🙂

Bake with LiLI and Dex after the two inspirations in my life!!

Can you describe it in one sentence?

Baking boxes for kids full of ready weighed out ingredients and instructions to allow your children to be creative in the kitchen with minimal fuss stress and weighing out!

When did you become a Mumpreneur and what inspired you?

I’ve been a teacher for 13 years now and bake a lot with the children. Eliza loves those boxes youimg_4190 can buy in the supermarket but they taste rubbish and I wanted her to learn about baking using a range of ingredients but couldn’t be doing with the stress of weighing and measuring.
The kids inspired me to start the business in the summer and after going through a divorce I wanted to prove to myself I could turn my hand to something new and exciting and to make the kids proud of me when they are older and know you have to work hard in life to get what you want.

How did you fund your start up?

My parents and my uncle paid for my website. We have had another investor come forward as well. It’s lovely that people close to me really believes in the success of the business and we’re willing to part with their hard earned cash!!

How do you manage working around your children?

I have an amazing Mum! I work late into the evenings but see this as fun a project to stretch and challenge me. Teaching is my bread and butter. This is all about my creativity and I absolutely love it and love seeing happy kids and products they’ve made as a result of our boxes.

Can you describe a typical day, what tasks do you have to get done, how do you manage your time?

lol I don’t manage my time as well as I should anyone close to me will tell you that. Routine for the kids has to come first. I take Eliza to childminders at 7 and Dexter at 7.15 to nursery 2 days a week and my mum takes them the other two days. Luckily I don’t work Mondays so this is my fun day with my boy whilst his sister is at school.
I usually mark, plan lessons and Normal stuff once they have gone to bed then speak to mum discussing the business, checking emails and orders, loading with our website and graphic designer and now am in the process of sourcing a photographer and someone to film me baking with the kids for YouTube videos.

What challenges have you faced in your business and how have you overcome them?

There is not enough time in the day!! We have had some label issues and personalising them away from the graphic designer so mum and I have become very quickly accomplished at photoshop and other graphics programmes to get products to clients in time.

What’s the best thing about being Mumpreneur?

It’s about and for my kids. They are my motivation to make this business a success.

What are your plans for the future?

To sell through a big well known website… they have said they love my products but we need to develop the package if to look more premium. That will be our next steps in the new year and also to sell at as many craft Fayre and events as we can to get our brand out there.

What advice would you give for someone just starting out in business?

Persevere and use people around you. it’s definitely a challenge but helps to have a dad as a bank manager, a friend as a website designer one as a tax advisor and lots of great friends willing to support share my page and trial my products giving lovely reviews to share on sites like Facebook, Instagram And twitter

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

Our products are great alternative to party bags and this is our biggest success feedback from parents not wanting to waste money on the toys and sweets you usually buy to fill them up. Take a look… 🙂

Tell us your name and a bit about your family? When did you become a Mum and to whom?

My name’s Katharine. I married my husband in 2006 and after a couple of years I reluctantly took his surname to become Katharine Tate and to be honest it has been very handy. It’s a great ice-breaker and very memorable! I became a mum in 2008 and have a gorgeous daughter.

What’s your business called?

My business is called The Food Teacher. I have worked as a teacher and education consultant internationally in Primary and Secondary schools for over 20 years. I qualified in September 2014 as a registered nutritional therapist and founded The Food Teacher brand, which enables me to combine my unique education and nutrition expertise to offer schools, organisations, and families advice, education programmes, practical workshops, and individual/family consultations. Clients of The Food Teacher fall broadly into 4 categories: schools, parents/individuals, corporates/community and media/publishing companies.

Can you describe it in one sentence?

The Food Teacher works with individuals, families, schools, community groups and corporates to educate about food and nutrition for a healthy family life.

When did you become a Mumpreneur and what inspired you?

During my last year studying nutritional therapy I had the idea to combine my education and nutrition expertise to set up my business. Nutritional therapists tend to follow a very similar clinic focused business model and I was adamant I wanted to offer something different. It made real sense to me that I should utilise my skill set as an educator within a field that I was hugely passionate about.

How did you fund your start up?

I initially put some of my personal funds to start up the business paying for a website, laptop and some additional marketing material. Aside from that initial funding, I have reinvested and evolved the business as I have earned.

How do you manage working around your daughter?

My working day is usually 9-3 and then 8-10 if needed. I do the school run most days and as my daughter’s now older she does several after school clubs so some days I am able to work longer without needing to utilise the evening. The weekends often involve Food Festivals or events and fortunately my family are hugely supportive and tend to come along.

Can you describe a typical day, what tasks do you have to get done, how do you manage your time?

Every day tends to be very different. Typical tasks include working in a school, preparing material for a school or an event, writing articles for various magazines/blogs, preparing for/seeing clients, recipe development, meetings involving the promotion or development of my work with organisations and sometimes business or nutrition training for my own personal development. I plan my diary carefully and I start each week with a detailed plan of things to do, which is so valuable for keeping me focused and on track.

What challenges have you faced in your business and how have you overcome them?

My biggest challenge has been trying to do everything. Initially as a one-man operation being the service provider, marketer, developer, administrator and accountant has been challenging as I’ve strived to have everything in place at a professional level from the outset. This has been good in many ways but has increased my work-load considerably. Now as the business has evolved I have been able to employ a personal assistant and utilise the services of others to support my business growth.

What’s the best thing about being Mumpreneur?

There are lots of things that make being a Mumpreneur a fantastic career move. Being around for my daughter has to be the biggest advantage, I’m not missing out on time with her. Being able to plan my own diary, choose the work I do and do something I really love make this a great opportunity.

What are your plans for the future?

The primary objective of the business is to continue to build the brand and reputation of The Food Teacher to become the leading voice in child and family nutritional education. The challenges of childhood obesity, learning disabilities, food intolerances and mental health issues are continuing to grow, and people are starting to recognise the importance of food and education as a tool to tackle the problem.

What advice would you give for someone just starting out in business?

My three top tips for someone thinking about or starting out in business would be:

1. Look at your current skill set. Skills and experiences can be transferable and aspects of your current or previous job can very often be skills/competencies that you are very good at. Think inventively about how you could utilise and incorporate those skills.
2. Consider what you really enjoy and love doing. Even if it’s merely a hobby for now or an interest, think about how it could be developed into a business. If you do something you really love, your energy levels for making it succeed are huge and you wake up with a smile most mornings!
3. Utilise the support of others. Surround yourself by a few trusted people or a mentor that will challenge you and hold you accountable along the way. In the beginning you can say yes to lots of opportunities for your business but being brought back down to earth by someone who asks you why and what is the point is invaluable. This helps you keep focused and work to achieve what you set out to do.

Look out for The Food Teacher at events including appearances at Fantastic British Food Festivals throughout the summer at Bodiam Castle, Wimbledon Park, Hyde Hall and Leeds Castle. When did you become a Mumpreneur and what inspired you?
As i had my children so young i had to leave collage and stay at home , I also had to leave my part time job too , as funding for childcare costs was to expensive , so one day i was sitting having a Coffee and said to my husband I’am going to start my own business doing Sweet Cones so i done a bit of Research and started off small and now I do all types of Event’s i.e wedding’s to Corporate events and travle all over the uk with Fun Food Hire and Sweet treats.

How did you fund your start up?
I had no Money and had to Borrow Money From a Family Member but it was only a small amount of £40 and thats were it all began I saved all the money that i brung back in and put it back in the business.

How do you manage working around your children?
It’s Hard to beging with but you get in a routine and my Husband is a great support and help .

Can you describe a typical day, what tasks do you have to get done, how do you manage your time?
My typical day normally starts around 6.30am getting the kids ready doing the car runs , getting them fed and washed , then coming back to my office and going through emails and enquires , Getting orders made and sent out, metting with client’s and organizing Event’s I have on at The Weekend . Each day is diffrent and never the same but again you find you get in a routine and you learn to have time for you, your family and business.

What challenges have you faced in your business and how have you overcome them?
I have not Faced any challanges yet with the business but i’am sure there are still to come and when the do i will be able to overcome and deal with them .

What’s the best thing about being Mumpreneur?
The Best Thing about being a Mumprenur is working for myself being my own boss and having time with my Children and watching them grow up I Love what I Do and would not change it for the world.

My Advice to Anyone who is a mum and want’s to start there business is Just go for it what have you to lose also Be open to learn all that you can. Build relationships. Practice in shared realities and Be willing to accept challanges
